Whey Products

What is whey?

Whey is the liquid remaining in cheese production, after milk has been curdled and strained. It has very high nutritional value. As a by-product of cheese making, if poured into a waterway it has the potential to reduce water oxygen levels, which can cause serious environmental problems. Such a disposal method is illegal.

On the contrary, whey processing leads to a large number of useful dairy products, us whey cheeses and whey protein products. Whey protein is the collection of proteins isolated from whey. After the cheese making process, whey is collected, pasteurized and immediately cooled, therefore maintaining the freshness and the excellent quality before its final processing.

The production includes first of all the ultra-filtration procedure which separates whey protein from the other whey ingredients such as lactose, and then evaporation, drying and packaging. The procedure takes place under strictly controlled health conditions with systematic quality control. The final product —whey protein powder— is a powder of a high level nutritional value. It is a rich source of all the necessary amino acids which play a main role in the protein production in the muscles. It also has a strong antioxidant action and improves the functioning of the immune system. It can also be used in a range of applications including dairy, confectionery, supplement and functional foods.

Finally, whey processing offers the most reliable solution to the major ecological problem of whey disposal, not only by producing pure, natural and useful dairy products, but mainly by giving water as the only and final by-product at the completion of the process.

Myzithra is a traditional whey cheese made from sheep’s and goat’s milk. It has a rich taste with dry butter and milk protein aromas. It has an off-white color and usually a round, compact shape. Myzithra is dried in a closed drier for at least 5-to-6 days. Myzithra can be grated on pasta and is often a side dish in Greek cuisine.

Whey Protein

Whey Protein

Whey Protein derives from the production of Real Greek Feta. Whey protein is an excellent source of protein containing the necessary building blocks to help strengthen your immune system. Whey Protein is suitable for the whole family, preferred by individuals intolerant of the casein found in cows’ milk and has been carefully prepared at low temperature from pasture-fed goat’s and sheep’s milk.

Whey protein is ideal for athletes of any sport that require large quantities of protein on a daily basis, as well as for those that do sports to ameliorate their physical condition, those that follow a nutrition program, and the elderly that want to increase their daily intake of protein for a more robust body. It contains 24 grams of pure whey protein for every 30 gram serving, in combination with low levels of fat and lactose. The unique quality and nutritional value of the whey protein is displayed in the comparison table below, where other sources of protein are mentioned alongside Whey Protein.

Immune System

Whey protein contains high levels of the aminoacids glutamine and cystine which have an effect on the increase of Gloutathione. Gloutathione has a strong antioxidant action and ameliorates the functioning of the immune system. With the use of whey protein, levels of Gloutathione in the body increase, which helps maintain a healthy and strong body.

Body Weight Control

Whey protein is easily digested and quickly absorbed by the body, which saturates the feeling of hunger while at the same time being low in calories. The use of whey protein may therefore lower the daily intake of calories, without the feeling of hunger, thus helping control body weight.

Benefits for the Elderly

Elderly people who consume lower quantities of protein have been proven to have a lower mass density. A diet that includes high quality whey can help in the conservation of muscle mass, especially when it is combined with an exercise and endurance regime.

Cost Relative to Value

Whey protein is a rich source of high quality protein, which costs very little and can be prepared and consumed in very little time.

This is an European identified product, deriving from sheep and goat whey, after the production of Feta PDO.
